RAI: Prix Italia, L'Aquila – the 2026 Italian Capital of Culture –
will host the 78th Edition from September 28 to October 2

 

L'Aquila, Italian Capital of Culture 2026, will host the 78th edition of Prix Italia, the historic international competition organized by RAI and dedicated to the best of Radio, Television, and Multimedia production, under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic.

From September 28 to October 2, the city centre will host the Festival and Rai previews screening, as well as the Competition, which annually involves over 100 broadcaster organizations from about 90 countries. This is a key event for the media sector, bringing together Italian and international directors, authors, artists, and professionals. For the first time in its history, the Prix Italia will be held in the heart of the historic centre of the Abruzzo capital city, "a symbol of rebirth and innovation", says Prix Italia Secretary General Chiara Longo Bifano, "recognized as a model of a smart city capable of representing both historical memory and contemporary transformation". The Competition, as Longo Bifano denotes, aims to "enhance the role of broadcasters in promoting art and culture, balancing creativity and technology".

The choice of L'Aquila is based on an area capable of attracting productions and major cultural events, while also offering an environment which is rich in natural locations and production expertise. Thanks to the support of the Abruzzo Region and the Film Commission, participants will be able to develop new experiences and international co-production projects.

The Competition is open to broadcasters, with registration open until June 8th in the Radio & Podcast, TV, and Digital sections. Three special prizes are also given: the Award in Honor of the President of the Italia Republic, the Signis Award, and the YLAB Award, assigned by university students from the Universities and Cultural Institutions of Abruzzo.

The president of the performing arts edition will be Corey Baker, the award-winning New Zealand director and choreographer, also known for viral works, such as Lady Gaga's "Dead Dance" choreography, launched by the "Wednesday" Netflix series, and "Swan Lake Bath Ballet", created for the BBC and winner of the Prix Italia in 2021 with the following citation: "For generations to come, this extraordinary production will represent a perfect example of how creative human beings can be, even in times of crisis".

"It's an honour to be President of the Prix Italia in a year focussing on the performing arts" says Corey Baker. "For me, that means stuff that's weird, wild, silly, indulgent, impossible and new. That's what creative people want to make and – if broadcasters will trust those creatives - they'll see that it's what audiences want too".

RAI: Prix Italia, sarà L'Aquila – Capitale italiana della Cultura 2026 –
ad ospitare la 78ª edizione dal 28 settembre al 2 ottobre

 

Sarà L'Aquila, Capitale italiana della Cultura 2026, ad ospitare la 78ª edizione del Prix Italia, lo storico Concorso internazionale organizzato dalla RAI e dedicato al meglio della produzione radiofonica, televisiva e multimediale, sotto l'Alto Patronato del Presidente della Repubblica.

Dal 28 settembre al 2 ottobre, il centro cittadino ospiterà il Festival e le anteprime Rai e il Concorso, che ogni anno coinvolge oltre 100 organismi radiotelevisivi provenienti da circa 90 Paesi. Un appuntamento di riferimento per il settore, che riunisce registi, autori, artisti e operatori italiani e internazionali.

Per la prima volta nella sua storia, il Prix Italia si svolgerà nel cuore del centro storico della città abruzzese, "simbolo di rinascita e innovazione - afferma la Segretaria generale del Prix Chiara Longo Bifano - riconosciuta come modello di smart city capace di rappresentare insieme memoria storica e trasformazione contemporanea". Il Concorso - precisa Longo Bifano - vuole "valorizzare il ruolo dei broadcaster nel promuovere arte e cultura, in equilibrio tra creatività e tecnologia". La scelta de L'Aquila punta su un territorio in grado di attrarre produzioni e grandi eventi culturali, offrendo al tempo stesso un contesto ricco di location naturali e competenze produttive.

Grazie al supporto della Regione Abruzzo e della Film Commission, i partecipanti potranno sviluppare nuove esperienze e progetti di coproduzione internazionale. Il Concorso è riservato ai broadcaster, con iscrizioni aperte fino all'8 giugno nelle sezioni Radio & Podcast, TV e Digital. Tre i premi speciali previsti: il Premio in onore del Presidente della Repubblica, il Premio Signis e il Premio YLAB, assegnato da una giuria di studenti delle Università e delle Istituzioni culturali d'Abruzzo.

Presidente dell'edizione dedicata alle arti performative sarà Corey Baker, pluripremiato regista e coreografo neozelandese, noto anche per opere diventate virali come la coreografia di "Dead Dance" di Lady Gaga, lanciata dalla serie Netflix "Wednesday", e "Swan Lake Bath Ballet", creato per la BBC e vincitore del Prix Italia nel 2021 con la seguente motivazione: "Per le generazioni a venire, questa straordinaria produzione rappresenterà un perfetto esempio di quanto gli esseri umani possano essere creativi, anche in tempi di crisi".

"È un onore essere Presidente del Prix Italia in un anno dedicato alle arti performative" - dichiara Corey Baker. "Per me, questo significa cose strane, selvagge, folli, stravaganti, impossibili e nuove. Questo è ciò che le persone creative vogliono realizzare e – se le emittenti si fideranno di questi creativi – capiranno che è ciò che vuole anche il pubblico".
