At the time, General Charles de Gaulle, a passionate soldier, is the newly appointed prime minister of France, a country that is in the middle of a serious constitutional crisis with the threat of a military coup. Konrad Adenauer, a devout Catholic, has been the head of government of a divided country for almost ten years by then.
