The Americans and their NATO allies have pledged to leave Afghanistan by 31 August. The Taliban offensive is advancing steadily towards the city. While French, Italian, German and American diplomatic and military personnel were preparing to leave, the Nazany family was in denial about the situation. But within hours, Kabul fell to the Taliban. While the panicked population rushed to the French embassy – the only one still open – or to the international airport, the Western services tried to impose order on the gigantic chaos, to save what could be saved.
