Pompei and Ercolano were two thriving Roman colonies: then, one night in the year 79 aD, the volcano erupted covering them with tons of ashes. Yet, that catastrophe meant they were going to be preserved for posterity. At the foothills of the Colli Euganei, in Veneto, along the old road that leads to Este, the abbey of Praglia is an old Benedectine monastery that goes back to the 12th century. Here, in 1951, the monks created a laboratory for ancient books’ preservation and restoration. Young Rosario Messina used to say that the bed is where life begins.
